City breaks: go compact

For Tunis, Sousse or Sfax, a small hatchback is your friend. It slips through narrow medina streets, sips fuel and parks almost anywhere. If it's just one or two of you with light luggage, you won't need more.

Coast & countryside: go comfortable

Heading down the coast or inland to Kairouan and beyond? A comfortable sedan or a small SUV handles long distances and rougher roads with ease — and leaves room for everyone’s bags.

Manual or automatic?

Most rental cars in Tunisia are manual. Automatics exist but are fewer, so they book out fast — especially in summer. If you only drive automatic, reserve as early as you can.

Tip

Booking an automatic in July or August? Reserve at least two weeks ahead — availability is tight during the high season.

Documents & insurance

Keep the essentials ready and pickup takes minutes:

  • A valid driving licence (an International Driving Permit is recommended)
  • Your passport
  • A credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit
  • Driver aged 21 or over
